John, most common is a tight tappet, valve seat wears a bit then adjustment goes out of window, easy to check, fast to remedy.

if you still have the problem easy to check valve leakage,
Inlet valve, hold hand over carb on compression stroke, if you feel any pressure, inlet valve leaking,
exhaust valve remove exhaust hold hand over exhast port, any pressure on compression stroke exhaust is leaking.
also if pressure, a very rare occurrence is the decompressor leaking,

If these checks fail to find anything , Its off with her head to investigate.

My initial thoughts though are tight exhaust valve.

good luck, if not see you sooner than you thought, Henry, Spare parts dept. Pricepart Motorcycles
